Having performed their first shows at Luna Lounge on Manhattan's Lower East Side, in 1999 they released a self-titled EP The French Kicks under the label My Pal God. It’s so refreshing when bands create a fusion of genres with their music, and this is exactly what French Kicks have achieved, blending indie rock with post-punk music, and creating a really original sound. The group started playing together before college, and it’s astounding what a long way they’ve come since those days.
The setup of the band when they perform live is great, as it’s evident that the band have been playing together for many years, with the exception of a couple of newer members, but they bounce off each others creativity wonderfully. The harmonies that are provided from the instrumentalists on vocals are brilliant and sometimes almost trance like. The band appear very chilled out and as if the tracks come easy to them, as well as being enthused by their music.
Their interaction with the audience was great, and during Over The World, Nick jumped down off stage and walked along the front of the audience whilst singing, and help out his hand to fans. The personalities of the band members, alongside their talent made for such a great evening – highly recommended to anyone who is a music enthusiast. Even if you don’t think it’s the genre for you, I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
